Democracy thrives as African American communities advance. Research demonstrates: citizenship by birth, legal due process, anti-discrimination laws from education to housing to employment and equitable small business investments all stem from institutional reforms known today as DEI. Yet, in recent years, DEI has been used as a diversion by cynical politicians and activists to roll back progress and strengthen control.

The Concrete Impact of These Current Strategies

The effect of these approaches is substantial and unquestionable. Since the start of this year, research has found that over three hundred thousand African American women have lost their jobs and $3.4 billion in grant programs investing in African American neighborhoods has been eliminated – comprising $9.4 million for sickle cell studies, $42 million for initiatives designed to address Black maternal mortality plus $31m in reductions targeting asthma prevalence and environmental contaminants harming African American youth.

Historical Context and Wider Consequences

Concerted attempts to suppress the progress of Black communities is not new; nevertheless, history has proven that whenever progress for Black people are removed, all communities face negative consequences. During Reconstruction, African Americans achieved remarkable progress – holding office, building businesses and creating educational institutions. Less discussed is the way additional marginalized groups, from white sharecroppers to Latino gauchos, also benefited from expanded opportunities to legal and economic systems.

Distortion is among the most deceptive strategies. It alters truth in ways that narrow our expectations and cements bigotry through legislation.

When Black people faced a century of Jim Crow and state-sanctioned discrimination, other communities experienced comparable setbacks regarding their entry to full citizenship. When the civil rights movement worked to remove the remnants of segregation, its practices of nonviolent civil disobedience increased liberty and access not only for African Americans, but for communities from every demographic. From the Native American movement to progress in LGBTQ+ rights to women's economic empowerment, African American equality efforts opened the aperture for greater civil liberties.

Present Obstacles and Intentional Efforts

Nevertheless, whenever Black communities make progress, groups opposing transformation work to push us back. As we face present leadership, DEI serves as the defense ensuring a pluralistic democracy. Its strength stems not from partisanship, but in the promise of the nation's foundation: that all people are created equal and merit opportunity to thrive.

It's essential to understand these attacks as part of a deliberate campaign. The objective is to rewrite the country's narrative and restrict the futures for African Americans, and by extension, any American considered inferior. It's easy to view their actions separately, but this is intentional.

Academic and Financial Impacts

Educational funding and academic initiatives are being cut, causing African American scholars with reduced opportunities to pursue a quality education. These cuts also affect Indigenous learners and served as a predicate for assaults against Latino scholars. African American households continue to live in districts having poorly funded education because of longstanding practices of separation and disparity, and the concomitant effect of cutting programs unequally affects all low-income children and individuals with disabilities.

Funding for African American enterprises and crucial healthcare programs has been reduced, leaving our nation lacking the information needed to confront institutional inequalities within the economic system and medical infrastructure. The subsequent impact will weaken research and investment for women across racial categories. By rewriting who matters, who is appreciated and what histories are taught, these approaches intensify the obstacles that communities have struggled for generations to overcome.

Erasure and Suppression in Tandem

Erasure and suppression work in tandem, and those implementing them predictably start with Black America. Individuals attempting to weaken democratic systems have removed African American narratives from curricula, displays and collective consciousness, depriving us of the lessons about resistance, correction and restoration. Growing authoritarian regimes understand how to influence schools, universities, corporations and government institutions toward quiet compliance.

The Path Forward and Shared Duty

The challenge currently facing us is: how will we respond to these developments? Should we permit anxiety, misinformation and authoritarianism to write the next chapter? Or will we act, determinedly and intentionally, to protect reality, respect African American advancements and protect the right to opportunity for every American? The answer will influence not just this moment, but also the destiny of the nation.

Protecting and defending the significant advancements achieved represents an ethical necessity, one that demands concerted civil action. Like the fight for freedom has taught us, when we fight for liberty, we win. We certainly confront coordinated attacks against reality, designed to create hopelessness or lead to inaction – but we cannot allow that.

The country's tomorrow won't come automatically. Its success or failure will be determined on our decisions to do and resist today.

America's story started with the principle that from many, unity could emerge. E pluribus unum represents the core of diversity, equity and inclusion, the lived reality for African Americans and the evidence that we can create something greater beyond anxiety and hopelessness. Collectively, we can maintain access, honor truth and strengthen democratic systems for generations to come.
