The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
