An underground economy for unlicensed slimming drugs is propelled by social media fitness personalities and sellers on messaging platforms, according to recent findings.

Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Active Trade on Messaging Platforms

Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Vendors promote the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could assist patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries

However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Several experts said the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Legal Status and Implementation

Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some influencers try to circumvent the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, risking fines, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Reaction and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to keeping the service safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Online Marketplace Activities

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or injecting at residence.

After moments of joining one group, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When questioned whether the product was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Details and Costs

Inside these communities, posts show dark colored packages with postal service stickers, stating to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually priced at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

A representative for Telegram stated it actively moderated harmful content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are turning to online platforms. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.

Her team has previously seen patients harmed by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from Telegram or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”

A representative from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
