Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to challenge certain decisions made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
